The Dream Girls Project
The Dream Girls is a netball team based in Munchini village in Shimabala consisting of girls aged between 13 and 19.
The Basics Project has undertaken to work with the team as one of its projects under its objectives of promoting Sports Education in rural communities.
About the Project
This project encapsulates the organization’s four pillars of health, education, entrepreneurship, and culture, and hopes to implement sustainable solutions that will assist the team members accordingly. This project runs alongside that of the Shamwana Stars boys football team as they currently share some facilities and is led by Miss Mutuna Mwondela.
The team was established by the locals in 2022 to encourage the girls to get involved in sports like their male counterparts who play football to promote a healthier lifestyle and to keep them occupied instead of remaining idle and engaging in illicit vices. Prior to this, they had not heard of the sport or seen a netball ball. With the introduction of health, education, and entrepreneurial skills to the team by the organization, the hope is that in the long run, this will reduce chances of teenage pregnancies and early marriages within the community which is a common occurrence.
The Mpelembe Secondary School Class of 2002 donated some netball essentials to The Dream Girls
“We thank you for your support and for your desire to help us succeed in this venture. We appreciate your association with our cause and hope that you take pride in knowing that you and your entire group have made a difference to the lives of not one but an entire netball team of young ladies whom we are very proud of”
HYGIENE HEROES
Currently The Basics Project has teamed up with Donate a Pad to raise menstrual health awareness and teach the girls how to make re-usable pads as an alternative for disposable pads that they usually cannot afford. The need for materials to be used is a continuous one and your support will be highly appreciated.
